How to Check If a BIP Exists and What to Do Next:

Look in the IEP
Go to the “Behavior Intervention” or “Support Services” section.
Look for a document called “Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)” or references to an “FBA” (Functional Behavior Assessment).

  1. If You Don’t See It:
Email the school (start with the case manager or assistant principal) and ask:

    • Does my child currently have a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)?

    • If so, can we receive a copy?

    • If not, can we request a team meeting to determine if one is needed?

  2. Ask About Implementation:

    • How is the aide trained to implement the BIP?

    • How is data collected (frequency, method, who tracks it)?

    • Who supervises or reviews progress?

  3. Document Everything

    • Keep communication in writing.

    • Take notes during meetings.

    • Ask for data summaries every few weeks or months.

  4. Know Your Rights

    • Under IDEA, services must be individualized and measurable.

    • Lack of a BIP (when needed) or lack of progress tracking can be a denial of FAPE.
