How to Check If a BIP Exists and What to Do Next:
Look in the IEP
Go to the “Behavior Intervention” or “Support Services” section.
Look for a document called “Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)” or references to an “FBA” (Functional Behavior Assessment).
If You Don’t See It:
Email the school (start with the case manager or assistant principal) and ask:Does my child currently have a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)?
If so, can we receive a copy?
If not, can we request a team meeting to determine if one is needed?
Ask About Implementation:
How is the aide trained to implement the BIP?
How is data collected (frequency, method, who tracks it)?
Who supervises or reviews progress?
Document Everything
Keep communication in writing.
Take notes during meetings.
Ask for data summaries every few weeks or months.
Know Your Rights
Under IDEA, services must be individualized and measurable.
Lack of a BIP (when needed) or lack of progress tracking can be a denial of FAPE.
